Small Habits, Big Wins On Your Black Belt Journey
Earning your black belt is a significant commitment. The journey typically lasts around four years, but it can sometimes be longer. It’s a journey that you need to be nominated for, to begin the pursuit.
These are the steps involved, after you’ve received the nomination:
- Fill out a visualization sheet that helps you visualize the type of person you will be after earning the black belt. (strong, self-disciplined, helpful, etc.)
- Create a vision board with inspiration to help stay true to your goal along the way.
- Watch our “What It Means To Be A Black Belt” video with your parents, and answer a questionnaire about your commitment to training, and why now is the best time to join.
- Set up a conference with a training instructor to discuss black belt training programs and choose the right program for you and your family.
As you advance in the program, it helps to build up small, positive habits to help you achieve the big wins.
Many families come with the goal of building confidence, developing self-discipline, and creating family memories. When they qualify for black belt training, they also join higher level classes that set them up for success. They have the option to join our formalized Leadership Instructor Training programs as well, so that they can learn how to lead their peers.
Below are some of the small habits that they can develop to help them find success along this amazing journey:
Mindset And Attitude: Students must bring the right attitude to the dojo, and anywhere they face challenges in life. This means remaining focused on your goals and achieving success, no matter how challenging the road may become.
Attendance And Consistency: It’s important for students to show up consistently and be active in their black belt training. Some days will be harder than others, but it’s helpful to show an eagerness to learn.
Listening To Learn: Students must be able to practice active listening with their instructors. They need the ability to watch the demonstrations, and then the body awareness to be able to practice these techniques on their own.
Value Feedback: The student and the instructor have the same goals. Measured improvement within the martial arts. Students must value feedback from their instructor and recognize that it’s intended to help them improve in their journey.
A Focus On The Positive: It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of instruction and feedback. Students must understand how to focus on the positive and understand that everyone has room to improve.
Prioritizing Health: A student who eats healthy meals, exercises regularly, and prioritizes healthy habits will be a better martial artist than one who does not.
Discipline And Commitment: There will be rough days. There will be days that you don’t feel like it. But the students who develop a strong sense of discipline and commitment are the students who will succeed.
