Developing The Rhythm Of Responsibility
Ask a parent why they enrolled their child in martial arts and you’ll probably hear something
about confidence, discipline, or fitness. Those are real benefits.
But there is a silent skill that is being learned summer after summer, class after class. Many of
us take it for granted. It often goes unnoticed.
It’s the rhythm of responsibility. The simple, repeatable habit of showing up on schedule, doing
the work whether or not you feel like it, and knowing that small effort compounds into something
bigger.
This rhythm is learned in the dojo but applied universally. Building a career, sustaining a
relationship, learning how to save money, and maybe most importantly- how to succeed in
school.
Developing this rhythm early on in life helps us grow. It teaches how to abstain, and self-
discipline.
While most activities reward talent in the moment, martial arts and education pay off much later.
This can be difficult for young people to understand the importance of, or strive towards. Without
a hit of dopamine being released from our brains by achieving goals and being encouraged by
our parents and peers, it can be hard for a young person to keep showing up for something with
a payoff so far away.
A student doesn’t earn a new belt, or an A+ on their report card, because one class went well. It
comes from repeated efforts every week, day in and day out, with no real reward until many
months, years, or decades later.
If children have the rhythm of responsibility engrained in them for an early age, it can drastically
change how they react to more difficult challenges as they get older. It can change how they
perform in structured environments, and as they become adults, in an environment they are free
to build that structure for themselves.
The bottom line is that children need, and want, structure- even though they may express
otherwise. It is our job as parents to provide enough structure to help them succeed. But you
don’t need to do it alone.
